At Mid-Michigan Eye Care, we suggest children should have their first eye exam at about 6 months of age. After this, it is generally accepted that they should have their eyes examined at the age of 3 and then just before they begin the first grade (age 5 or 6).
Once they have reached school age, it is appropriate to have them come and see us every two years if there is no vision correction required. If your child needs glasses or contacts, we would typically like to see them once a year.
Healthy eyes and good vision play a critical role in how infants and children learn to see. Eye and vision problems in infants can cause developmental delays, so it is important to detect conditions early to ensure they have everything they need to learn and grow.
